Mayor-Council Form of Government
Farmington has a Mayor-Council form of government with a full-time city administrator who is responsible for the day-to-day administrative operations of the city.
The Mayor and City Council are elected to make decisions on behalf of over 22,000 Farmington residents. They adopt and oversee the city's annual budget and set the annual property tax levy as one of the funding sources for the budget. The Mayor and Council also are responsible for policy decisions ranging from land use and subdivision applications to program development and contract awards.
City Council
The Farmington City Council has the primary responsibility of ensuring that the city exercises its functions properly and within the law. The term of mayor is for four years; councilmembers are elected to four-year terms in alternating elections. Municipal elections are held in November of even-numbered years, the same time as federal, state, and county elections.
City Attorney
The law firm of Campbell Knutson, P.A. represents the City of Farmington by advising the City Council and staff on municipal legal questions and undertaking prosecution matters.
City Administrator
The city administrator is responsible to the Farmington City Council for the proper administration of all affairs of the city. They are appointed by a majority vote of the City Council for an indefinite period of time.
