A message from Farmington Fire Chief Jim Larsen.
This morning we were dispatched to a home for a lightning strike. While there was no "raging" fire, the resident smelled an odor of something burning.
Firefighters from Engine 22 laddered the roof and found that lightning had struck the roof and blown off shingles and the roof vent cover. Firefighters from Engine 1 entered the attic and found that cable and other electrical wiring had been burned from the roof line down to the ceiling. We set up tarps and carefully...removed the smoldering insulation.
Before leaving the scene we covered the hole in the roof with tarps so the family could remain in the home overnight.
Remember: Better to have your home checked and find nothing, than to have a fire smolder and grow unchecked.
