Farmington Improves Rating in Recent ISO Survey

The Insurance Services Office, Inc. (ISO) rated the city of Farmington a Class 3 in its Public Protection Classification Survey (PPC), which is an improvement from the Class 5 rating the city received in 2012.

“I am very happy that the work of our fire department and others is paying off with these lower ratings,” said City Administrator David McKnight. “There are many benefits to our community with this reduced ratings and I am truly grateful for all of the work that city staff put into this process.”

The PPC rating is based off four categories; fire flows, emergency communications, the fire department and water supply. The survey started in the summer of 2017 and concluded in October. Upon completing the evaluation, a PPC rating is assigned from 1 to 10. A Class 1 rating represents an exemplary fire suppression program and a Class 10 indicates a fire suppression program does not meet the minimum criteria. Farmington was in the top 11 percent for the country with over 45,000 cities evaluated.

“Our department worked hard to make significate improvements in our training,” said Fire Chief Justin Elvestad. “The biggest impacts on our new score were the addition of a third fire engine and our emergency dispatching system through the Dakota Communications Center. The lower rating is a great accomplishment for Farmington.”

ISO is an independent company that serves insurance companies, communities, fire departments, insurance regulators and others by providing information about risk. Insurance companies use PPC information for marketing, underwriting, and to help establish fair premiums for homeowners and commercial fire insurance. In general, the price of fire insurance in a community with a good PPC rating is substantially lower than in a community with a poor PPC rating. Previously the city of Farmington held a Class 5. The new rating became effective Feb. 1, 2018.
